Almada’s campaign
The simulacra collection held by the SCMA is exquisite and includes:
- St Clementina and St Simplício (mother and child)
- St Fortunato and St Semuc (young individuals)
- St Primogénita, St Teodoro, and St Vitorino (three children).
Little is known about this collection, except that the simulacra were donated to the SCMA by the Count of Caparica, son of the Marquis of Valada, after 1831.
The HB team is dedicated to advancing our understanding of its historical context, production techniques, and the materials used in its creation.
Several fieldwork campaigns have been conducted, focusing on the close observation of the artefacts, sample collection, and in-situ analyses using digital microscopy and X-ray fluorescence. Additionally, digital X-ray imaging and 3D digitisation were performed.
Below, you’ll find a visual journey through our fieldwork, showcasing key moments.
