
Teresa Ferreira
Principal Investigator Teresa Ferreira (orcid: 0000-0001-7902-8900) is an Associate Professor at the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department, University of Évora (UÉ), where she has been involved in analytical chemistry, material science and chemistry applied to cultural heritage programs. She is an integrated member of HERCULES Laboratory, an interdisciplinary infrastructure dedicated to the study and valorisation of cultural heritage and IN2PAST – Associate Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory. She authored around forty research peer-reviewed papers and several book chapters, and she is the book editor of several scientific books and exhibition catalogues. She has supervised multiple undergraduate, MSc and PhD theses. She has also coordinated and participated in research, educational and outreach projects funded by national agencies (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, Ciência Viva Agency, QREN) and other international funding agencies (EEA Grants, EU-ARTECH). Her main research areas include, besides relics, the study of graphical documents such as paper and iron gall inks, photographic items and illuminated manuscripts, historical textiles and tiles.

Eduarda Vieira
Co-Pi Eduarda Vieira is an Associate Professor at the School of Arts of UCP and an integrated researcher at CITAR in the field of Heritage, Conservation and Restoration. She holds a PhD in Conservation and Restoration from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) and has experience in the scientific coordination of projects. She served as the Principal Investigator for the projects GEO-SR (PTDC/ART-OUT/31304/2017) funded by FCT and HAC4CG funded by NORTE-45-2020-75 – Sistema de Apoio à Investigação Científica e Tecnológica – “Projetos Estruturados de I&D&I” – Horizonte Europa.

Ana Curto
Ana Curto works as a PhD researcher at the HERCULES Laboratory|UÉ. Her primary area of research revolves around exploring the connection between diet and health in the context where antibiotics and modern medicine were not available. To delve into this subject, she adopts a comprehensive approach, combining data from stable isotope analysis and paleopathology. Apart from this project, she is also working on her individual project HD-TEC (2020.02110.CEECIND) and is the PI of the project InOsteo (2022.03576.PTDC), both funded by FCT.

Ana Manhita
Ana Manhita is a Chemist and assistant researcher at HERCULES Laboratory|UÉ. She completed her PhD in Chemistry in 2012, focused on the material study of historical textiles. She mainly develops her research in the field of analytical chemistry applied to the study of cultural heritage objects, with particular emphasis on the application of advanced chromatographic techniques for the study of organic materials.

A. Camões Gouveia
António Camões Gouveia holds a PhD in History and Theory of Ideas, specialising in the History of Social Ideas from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He is an Assistant Professor at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, teaching History of the 16th to 18th centuries, and a member of CHAM|UNL and CEHR|UCP. His areas of scientific interest are centred on Social History, Sociabilities and Powers in the areas of History of Culture, Mentalities and Religious History. In a theoretical-practical confluence, he joins the Programming of Culture in the dimensions of Heritage, Museology and Mediation.

Fernanda Olival
Fernanda de Olival is an Associate Professor at the UÉ and coordinator of CIDEHUS, a Portuguese research centre specialised in societal changes in the South of Portugal and South of Europe (www.cidehus.uevora.pt). Her primary research area is the socio-political history of the Early Modern Iberian World, focusing on Military Orders and the Inquisition. Her main books are: The Military Orders and the Portuguese Expansion (15th to 17th centuries) (2018); D. Filipe II de cognome “O Pio” (2008), and As Ordens Militares e o Estado Moderno: honra, mercê e venalidade em Portugal (1641-1789) (2001).

Joana Palmeirão
Joana Palmeirão holds a PhD in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage from the School of Arts at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Porto). Since 2013, her primary focus has been on the study, conservation, and valorisation of simulacra of catacomb martyrs, which arrived in Portugal between the 18th and 19th centuries, containing exhumed human remains (“corpi santi”) from the catacombs of Rome. Currently, she is a postdoctoral research fellow within the scope of the project “Holy Bodies” (2022.01486.PTDC), funded by FCT. Since 2016, she has been a member and consultant for the International Crusade for Holy Relics (ICHR).

Jorge Duarte de Sá
Jorge Duarte de Sá is an Architect with a PhD in Visual Arts, Art, Science and Technology and a master’s degree in Creation and Production in Technological Arts. He is a Professor in the Architecture department at the University of Évora, and a member of CIDEHUS|UÉ. The research area encompasses media technologies in Architecture and Art. Since 1989, his achievements include several films and multimedia works that have already won awards at various film festivals.

José Saias
José Saias is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Informatics from the School of Science and Technology, and a researcher at VISTA Lab research unit, both at the University of Évora. He holds a PhD in computer science (on Natural Language Processing and question answering systems, in 2010) from University of Évora. His research interests include Artificial Intelligence (question-answering, opinion mining and persuasion detection in digital content), Distributed Systems and Data Security.

Leonel Alegre
Leonel Alegre has a PhD in Organometallic Chemistry, and for a short period of time, he studied pigments traditionally used in painting and dyeing using solid-state NMR techniques. He dedicated much of his professional career to science communication and education in non-formal environments, being the Head of Education and Exhibition of the Knowledge Pavillion – Ciência Viva. He is currently a researcher at the UÉ, where he coordinates the _ARTERIA_LAB, a creative laboratory dedicated to transdisciplinary research and experimentation and civic participation, and PIXEL, an educational laboratory for immersive reality.

Luís Piorro
Luís Piorro is a documentary photographer of works of art and examinations at the José de Figueiredo Laboratory, Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, E.P.E., where he is responsible for the planning, execution, and interpretation of images relevant to the study and intervention process of the heritage. The documentary techniques involved visible spectrum photography, both in analog and digital formats, with large formats and high resolution. Additionally, area examination techniques in the visible spectrum are employed, such as radiography, infrared photography and reflectography, ultraviolet photography and fluorescence, sodium monochromatic light photography, and betagraphy, among others.

Margarida Nunes
Margarida Nunes holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Évora. Her main research topics have included the characterisation and the study of degradation phenomena of paper documents, photographic materials, and writing inks, ceramics through diverse analytical techniques. Her current research primarily focuses on the analytical study of the corpi santi within the context of this project.

M.ª A. Gago da Câmara
Maria Alexandra Gago da Câmara holds a PhD in History of Modern Art at the Open University (Lisbon), where she is an Assistant Professor and vice-coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Heritage Studies at the Department of Social Sciences and Management. She is an integrated researcher at CHAIA|UÉ and an associate researcher at CITAR|UCP (Decorative Arts) and ARTIS|UL (Tile Research Network). Her main areas of research focus on the 17th and 18th centuries in Portuguese Baroque applied Decorative Arts and Architecture, with a particular emphasis on Tilework, as well as Digital Humanities.

Nuno dos Santos serves as the Rector of the Major Seminary of Coimbra, Chaplain of the University of Coimbra, Director of the Diocesan Office for Vocational Pastoral, Assistant to the Diocesan Office for Family Pastoral, Director of the Pre-Seminary, member of the Episcopal Council, member of the Chapter of the Cathedral of Coimbra, member of the Pastoral Coordination Secretariat, and member of the College of Consultants. Currently, he is a member of the Ethics Committee of the University Hospital Center of Coimbra. He holds a Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (2017). Presently, he is an invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Theology of the UCP.

Tracy Ireland
Tracy Ireland is Professor of Cultural Heritage and Associate Dean Research of the Faculty of Arts and Design at the University of Canberra, and President of Australia ICOMOS. Tracy is known internationally for her research on heritage practice and the relationships between archaeology, conservation, and heritage across the settler colonial world. This work has influenced public policy and practice in Australia and abroad in the areas of ethics, social value, Indigenous historic heritage, and archaeological sites conservation.
