St Eugénio
The simulacrum of St Eugénio is housed on the altar of the side chapel of the Igreja de St António dos Congregados, on the Gospel side. Its name is confirmed by a small paper label in its left hand, which identifies it as the saint’s proper name
“S·EUGENIJ M· / Nomine Proprio”
According to historical documentation, the simulacrum, along with that of St Severino, was brought from Rome—inside carved urns—by order of the Bishop of Porto, D. Frei José Maria da Fonseca Évora, who subsequently gifted them to King João V.
At the request of Father Domingos Pereira of the Congregation of the Oratory in Lisbon, the holy bodies were donated by King João V to the former Convent of the Congregation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Porto to be displayed for worship.
In a letter published by Henrique Duarte e Sousa Reis (1999), it is stated that the shipment arrived in Porto on March 1, 1742.
